Ondrò Skearpie (2065m), trail 11A

From the junction (1844m) to Ondrò Skearpie

Trail 11A starts from the junction at 1844m along Trail 11B to Princes Valley, and reaches Ondrò Skearpie (2065m). It is 1268m long and the total positive elevation gain is 265m.
The approximate time for the ascent is 0h45. The trail is rated of difficulty E.

Ring 11A-11B

A very short trail, starting from a fork at 1,844 m that you come to when climbing from the hamlet of Valdobbia in Gressoney-Saint-Jean along trail 11B, which leads to the Valle dei Principi. It is normally an uphill or downhill alternative to that route, if you want to replace 100m of monotonous climbing in the woods with this interesting passage through two grassy slopes where you will find the Hoberg Inferiore (1900m, in a panoramic position overlooking Weismatten and Colle Ranzola) and Hoberg Superiore (1990m) mountain huts.

The trail ends at Ondrò Skerpieor Skerpie Inferiore (2065m), where it rejoins trail 11B.

1. Start and finish

Trail 11A starts from the junction at elevation 1844m along Trail 11B to Princes Valley, the elevation is 1834m.

2. The route

At the junction of 11A and 11B, take a right, immediately passing the Hobéergbach stream

It crosses the Hobéergbach stream.

Climbing for a short distance through the forest, we quickly reach the Hoberg Inferiore huts, 1900m,placed in a lovely spot, were it not for the high-tension pylon…

You go straight up to the second hut, following the trail back into the woods for a stretch and skirting the unique track of a mini-railway that connects Hoberg Inferiore to Hoberg Superiore.

We soon arrive at Hoberg Superiore, 1990m .

The path still continues vertically upward…

…reaching at about 2068m a wooden bridge over the Hobéerbach stream.

An almost horizontal section starts from the bridge, where you also lose some elevation, until you reach at about 2039m a scree slope that you skirt, climbing slightly to the left.

Once you have left the rocky terrain behind, you finally come out onto a grassy slope where the huts of Skerpie Inferiore (2065 m) appear.

At this point there is a reunion with Trail 11B, which continues to Princes Valley.

4. A recent hike

The ascent to the Valley of the Princes is always one of the first hikes I make each year. This is the May 28, 2022 ascent, I followed trail 11A as a downhill variant (during the ascent I followed trail 11B).
