Trail 5 starts from Obre Eselbode and arrives at Gabiet Hut (2370). It is 6277m long and the total positive elevation gain is 822m.
The approximate time for the ascent is 3h08. The trail is rated of difficulty E.

More challenging than Trail 5B (which starts from Punta Jolanda and follows a practically horizontal path), Trail 5 starts instead from Gressoney La Trinité and, after reaching Punta Jolanda (where the Punta Jolanda Restaurant, located in a truly panoramic position over Gressoney La Trinité), contours along the right bank the Lake Gabiet before arriving at the Gabiet refuge (it is possible to stay overnight), which with its characteristic red-and-white shutters is located just a few meters from the secondary dam of the lake.

Lake Gabiet is a natural lake that was closed by a dam in 1921 to feed the Gressoney hydroelectric plant. Today it is a popular destination especially for families because of the wide grassy bank along the northwest side (which allows for safe summer picnics) and also because of thewide availability of refuges in the area: the Gabiet See Refreshment Bar, the aforementioned Gabiet Refuge, Albergo Del Ponte (where it is possible to stay overnight) and Adler’s Nest. Following trail 6B it is possible to reach in about an hour’s walk another hut with overnight accommodations, the Orestes Hutte (exclusively vegan cuisine).

The first third of the trail (from the valley floor to Punta Jolanda) covers 700 of the total 800 meters of elevation gain. In the second section (from Punta Jolanda to Lake Gabiet) we rise only 100 meters. For this reason, those wishing to move from Punta Jolanda to Lake Gabiet after ascending with the chairlift, as an alternative to the very popular 5B trail may consider this second section of the much less-traveled Trail 5.
