class=\"wp-caption-text\">The summit cairn at Punta Valfredda, 2941m<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Trail <strong>5 <\/strong> starts from the hamlet of <strong>Bino <\/strong> and arrives at <strong>Punta Valfredda (2941m) <\/strong>passing first through <strong>Valnera\/Valdonier Pass (2676m)<\/strong>. It is <strong>5561m<\/strong> long and the total positive elevation gain is <strong>1552m<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe approximate time for the ascent is <strong>4h38<\/strong>. The trail is rated <strong>EE<\/strong> difficulty.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The Valnera Pass connects the Lys Valley with Palasina, above Brusson in Val D&#8217;Ayas. The trail starts between two holes on the golf course just above the town of Gressoney-Saint-Jean, to the left of the state road.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Although it is a trail that starts practically from the village, it is very little traveled and crosses a barren and lonely landscape with a few ruined and abandoned alpine pastures. From Valnera Pass one can reach, if one does not want to continue to Punta Valfredda, the closer <strong>Punta Valnera (2754m), which is<\/strong> less scenic but no less appreciable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The continuation to Punta Valfredda runs almost entirely to the left of the ridge: it presents no particular difficulty, but it is not clearly marked, and one must be able to identify the path by following cairns and sparse colored bolts (it is in fact this section that made the trail of EE difficulty).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Once you reach the top of Punta Valfredda, you will have an excellent view of <strong>Monte Rosa<\/strong>, the nearby <strong>Corno Vitello<\/strong> (reachable via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sentierigressoney.it\/en\/sentieri\/valfredda-pass-trail-5a\/\" class=\"sentiero-chip clickable-chip\">\n                    <i class=\"fas fa-hiking chip-icon-fa\"><\/i> \n                    <span class=\"chip-label\">TRAIL 5A<\/span>\n                <\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sentierigressoney.it\/en\/sentieri\/corno-vitello-trail-5b\/\" class=\"sentiero-chip clickable-chip\">\n                    <i class=\"fas fa-hiking chip-icon-fa\"><\/i> \n                    <span class=\"chip-label\">TRAIL 5B<\/span>\n                <\/a> in sequence) and <strong>Testa Grigia<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sentierigressoney.it\/en\/sentieri\/testa-grigia-trail-6\/\" class=\"sentiero-chip clickable-chip\">\n                    <i class=\"fas fa-hiking chip-icon-fa\"><\/i> \n                    <span class=\"chip-label\">TRAIL 6<\/span>\n                <\/a>). from the Ayas side, you can see the <strong>Valfredda lakes, the Palasina lakes, Corno Bussola<\/strong> and, if you look carefully because it is hidden by the slope, the nearby <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rifugioarp.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arp Refuge <\/a>(easily accessible from Colle Valnera). Looking south instead, one obviously identifies Punta Valnera and the Eclou pass (normally reached via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sentierigressoney.it\/en\/sentieri\/gressoney-saint-jean-trail-4-bocchetta-di-eclou\/\" class=\"sentiero-chip clickable-chip\">\n                    <i class=\"fas fa-hiking chip-icon-fa\"><\/i> \n                    <span class=\"chip-label\">TRAIL 4<\/span>\n                <\/a>) and Mont Cios\u00e9 (which can be reached from the Ranzola Pass via an untracked route).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Be careful not to get confused<\/strong>: trail 5 passes through <strong>Colle Valnera<\/strong> and leads to <strong>Punta Valfredda<\/strong>, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sentierigressoney.it\/en\/sentieri\/valfredda-pass-trail-5a\/\" class=\"sentiero-chip clickable-chip\">\n                    <i class=\"fas fa-hiking chip-icon-fa\"><\/i> \n                    <span class=\"chip-label\">TRAIL 5A<\/span>\n                <\/a> leads to <strong>Passo di Valfredda<\/strong>, but from there only <strong>Corno Vitello<\/strong> can be reached via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sentierigressoney.it\/en\/sentieri\/corno-vitello-trail-5b\/\" class=\"sentiero-chip clickable-chip\">\n                    <i class=\"fas fa-hiking chip-icon-fa\"><\/i> \n style=\"text-align: left\">From the Hill, if you do not want to continue to  <strong>Punta Valfredda<\/strong>, you can opt for the nearest  <strong>Punta Valnera.<\/strong>  This point is not visible from the pass: you have to follow the path  <em>5\/6A in the direction of the Estoul Lakes.  <\/em>About 15 minutes from the pass we come to a fork in the road: towards you go to the Arp Hut, we must instead go left, where after a short climb we arrive at the  <strong>Valnera Collar  <\/strong>placed at  <strong>2681m.  <\/strong>Here, Trail 6A descends from the Colletto to continue in the direction of the visible Estoul Lakes, but you can instead follow the very obvious (and friable) trail to the left\/northwest that climbs to <strong>Punta Valnera (2754m).  <\/strong>Advisable to use style=\"text-align: left\">Continuation to Punta Valfredda<\/h1>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Looking north, there is a long ridge that turns to the northwest, never steep on this side and quite rocky: this is the route to <strong>Punta Valfredda (2941m)<\/strong>. The trail is indicated by several cairns scattered not very regularly, and must be scouted carefully. It is important to always try to adock the next cairn before abandoning the previous one: this is not always possible; one must sometimes proceed by intuition and, perhaps, be prepared to turn back on a few occasions when one realizes that the path taken does not lead to any further cairns. Not surprisingly, Trail 5 is rated <strong>EE<\/strong> because of this last section.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The trail always keeps to the left of the ridge line: an expanse of large boulders is encountered almost at the beginning, which can be passed fairly easily (in the lower part) provided you take the right entrance, marked by arrows and yellow bolts painted on the larger boulders.<\/p>\n<p>As usual in such cases, the best advice is to carry a map on your cell phone with a GPX track loaded on it that allows you to see where you are in relation to the route you need to follow, and consult it frequently to correct your position when necessary.<\/p>\n<p>In the photo, taken from Punta Valfredda, you can see the entire ridge up to the Valnera Pass on the far In the morning I found a large flock of sheep in a corral at Valnera Inferiore, guarded by several Maremma dogs who, from inside the corral, barked furiously at the invader until I stood nearby. On the way back, at the height of Valnera Superiore, I found the same flock free, including the dogs: I approached with caution, but the presence of the shepherd meant that the wonderful dogs hardly gave me a glance :-)<\/p>\n<p>Spotted several ibex both along the final ridge and below the summit.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<div  class='avia-button-wrap
