<strong>11<\/strong> starts from the hamlet of <strong>Ondr\u00f2 Verdebi\u00f2<\/strong>\/<strong>Valdobbia<\/strong> and arrives at <strong>Colle Valdobbia (2480m)<\/strong>,where the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sentierigressoney.it\/en\/refuges\/#sottile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ospizio Sottile<\/a> hut is located. It is <strong>4557m<\/strong> long and the total positive elevation gain is <strong>1081m<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe approximate time for the climb is <strong>3h12<\/strong>. A tragedy that happened in 1820 prompted Valsesian canon <a href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nicolao_Sottile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nicolao Sottile<\/a> to finance the construction of the present mighty building, which was inaugurated in 1823. The first few years it was kept open for only three months (November, December and March), run initially by Sottile himself). From 1871 King Charles Albert allowed it to be open year-round, with two janitors taking turns covering the entire season.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18168\" style=\"width: 505px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sentierigressoney.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/DSF5460-HDR-Edit-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18168\" class=\"wp-image-8369 size-portfolio\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sentierigressoney.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/DSF5460-HDR-Edit-1-495x400.jpg\" alt=\"Sunset over the Vogna Valley\" width=\"495\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sentierigressoney.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/DSF5460-HDR-Edit-1-495x400.jpg 495w, https:\/\/www.sentierigressoney.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/DSF5460-HDR-Edit-1-845x684.jpg 845w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 495px) 100vw, 495px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-18168\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sunset over the Vogna Valley<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">With progress, and the creation of communication routes at less extreme altitudes, migrant transit became less and less important, and the bombs of World War II partly destroyed it: the ruined hospice was abandoned for several decades.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sentierigressoney.it\/en\/refuges\/#sottile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ospizio Sottile<\/a> was completely renovated in 2000 and is currently open only during the summer season. Since 2020, it has been run by the friendly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infovercelli24.it\/2020\/06\/16\/leggi-notizia\/argomenti\/gattinara-valsesia\/articolo\/simone-23-anni-e-la-passione-per-la-montagna-cosi-rinasce-lospizio-sottile.html\">Simone Polenghi<\/a>. You can enjoy excellent meals there and even stay overnight (see the dedicated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rifugioospiziosottile.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> for more details), allowing you to take in the spectacular sunset, weather permitting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The chapel attached to the building is dedicated to Our Lady of the Snow, and every year in August a mass is celebrated there (which, on August 4, 1890, was also attended by Queen Margaret of Savoy).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">It is the highest hospice in Europe, at a higher altitude than the much more famous <a href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ospizio_del_Gran_San_Bernardo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Great St. Bernard Hospice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Trail 11 up to it from Gressoney is quite long but perfectly marked: once past the valley step, the slope softens and you climb the wide valley from cliff to cliff, with the view of the Hospice disappearing at one point and reappearing when you have practically reached it. It is possible to find snowfields along the final stretch even in early summer, but they are traversable or circumventable without risk.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<div  class='avia-button-wrap After about twenty minutes of continuous turns, you reach the junction between Trail 11 to the Sottile, on the left, and Trail 11B to Princes Valley, on the right.<br \/>\nObviously take the left direction and continue to climb steadily and at a steady pace. You come to a ridge, where you first hear the sound of the Valdobbia stream (if the water flow is significant), and continue to climb without turning until you reach, at about 1900m, the lodges of <strong>Cialfrezzo Inferiore<\/strong>. It climbs up until it cuts to the right into the central snowy gully.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Crossing the basin, at a certain point the Ospizio Sottile disappears from view, hidden by the slope, and you will not see it again until you are almost there. Past the basin, the trail climbs on the left, at a steep gradient, until it reaches a snowy or stony gully (depending on the season) that is cut (very easily) to the right.
