id=\"caption-attachment-16220\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Mantua Refuge<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Trail <strong>6A<\/strong> starts from the <strong>Adler&#8217;s Nest<\/strong> hut and arrives at the <strong>City of Mantua hut (3455m)<\/strong>. It is <strong>6369m<\/strong> long and the total positive elevation gain is <strong>1094m<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe approximate time for the climb is <strong>3h24<\/strong>. The trail is rated <strong>EE<\/strong> difficulty.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sentierigressoney.it\/en\/refuges\/#mantova\">Citt\u00e0 di Mantova <\/a>refuge, inaugurated in 1984, owes its creation to a tragic event: in May 1978, four mountaineers from Mantua died near the nose of the Lyskamm, swept away by an avalanche. This page describes the short but technically challenging route to reach it: you need to cross the <em>Garstelet glacier<\/em>, so you must know how to use crampons and an ice axe on ice.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16240\" style=\"width: 505px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sentierigressoney.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/gnifetti-retro.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16240\" class=\"wp-image-6248 size-portfolio\" title=\"The Gnifetti Hut\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sentierigressoney.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/gnifetti-retro-495x400.jpg\" alt=\"The Gnifetti descending from the chapel.\" width=\"495\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sentierigressoney.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/gnifetti-retro-495x400.jpg 495w, https:\/\/www.sentierigressoney.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/gnifetti-retro-845x684.jpg 845w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 495px) 100vw, 495px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16240\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Gnifetti Hut<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The &#8220;Gnifetti Hut,&#8221; as it is commonly called, stands on the site where a small bivouac was built in 1876: enlarged several times in the following years, in 1967 (on the occasion of the centenary of the founding of the CAI section of Varallo) it was completely rebuilt, and the result is the hut we can admire today, which overlooks a steep rock face behind the Garstelet glacier.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Up to the Mantua refuge<\/strong> the route, classified as EE, is long but not technically challenging. The route climbs to Salza pass along the trail shared by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sentierigressoney.it\/en\/sentieri\/gressoney-la-trinite-trail-2-punta-telcio\/\" class=\"sentiero-chip clickable-chip\">\n                    <i class=\"fas fa-hiking chip-icon-fa\"><\/i> \n                    <span class=\"chip-label\">TRAIL 2<\/span>\n                <\/a> (Lago Blu, Punta Telcio) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sentierigressoney.it\/en\/sentieri\/salza-hill-trail-6b\/\" class=\"sentiero-chip clickable-chip\">\n                    <i class=\"fas fa-hiking chip-icon-fa\"><\/i> \n                    <span class=\"chip-label\">TRAIL 6B<\/span>\n                <\/a> (Orestes Hutte, Salza pass). Unlike 6B, 6A does not reach the Salza Pass but veers northeast when there are only a few hundred meters to go. Only the very last section on the rocks leading to the hut requires attention, as it is necessary in some passages to lean on your hands.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Mantua to Gnifetti<\/strong>, on the other hand, the route (the trail has no waymarks) is EEA: crampons and ice axe absolutely necessary to cross the glacier, which (although short) should never be underestimated.<\/p>\n<p>Mantua and Gnifetti are the bases from which all expeditions to the &#8220;eastern&#8221; destinations of the Rosa chain depart<em>(Punta Gnifetti\/Capanna Margherita, Punta Dufour, Pyramide Vincent, Punta It climbs fairly straight up to the hut: only toward the end might you need to rest your hands in the steeper passages (in the photo below it looks much steeper than it actually is). The path comes to you from the left, and it&#8217;s remarkable the feeling you get when you get there because until a second before you were scrambling through piles of steep rocks, and a second later you&#8217;re plunging into this totally horizontal terrace of polished wood, seconds away from a well-deserved Coke Zero at the counter! We are finally at the <strong>Citt\u00e0 Di Mantova refuge, 3455m<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16231\" style=\"width: 505px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a hut.<\/strong><\/h1>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>Important warning:<\/strong><\/span> although the crossing section of the Garstelet glacier is rather short, its danger should by no means be underestimated. The trail is always well marked and the glacier is not very steep, but losing your balance could lead to very serious consequences. You need <strong>ice crampons<\/strong> (not crampons), <strong>ice axe, helmet<\/strong> and you need to know how to perform the self-arrest maneuver on ice. Contact a qualified instructor to learn more.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The trail to the Gnifetti Hut is clearly visible as soon as you take a few steps away from the Mantova Hut heading north: you must first follow the trail and trail markers up the right-hand ridge, reaching an iron cross (Milan CAI Section) and the junction with the trail that ascends from the Indren Glacier, used by those arriving via the Indren cable car. After reaching the end of the glacier, a simple ladder leads up to the top of the relief, from which you easily descend a few meters to enter the hut. Until a few years ago, a lower slope could be followed, arriving at the foot of a short equipped vertical wall, which was quite challenging. The first one is taken from a map I made of Mt. Rose in 1930. The second is from Google Maps (the photo is from 2017, almost a hundred years later). 100 years ago the refuge was on a small island, lapped by the surrounding sea of ice.
